Our Job 

To create trust with  NIRA, a  fintech company based out of Bangalore, India. NIRA is an app that provides small loans to working class India, people who have typically never been offered access to fair credit.

The Product:

Loans are offered to any full-time employee making upwards of 12,000 INR a month.

-Long tenure 12 months  (even on  10k loan)

-If the application was solid most loans go right into their bank account in 24-48 hours

Our customers

Our demographic of people who usually make less than 30,000 a month and usually provide for more than one person on that salary. Our customers are all over India from Assam to Maharashtra, and UP to TamilNadu. All 26 states served. The larger observation was that most of our customers were from tier 1 and 2 cities/towns  although we had many customers from the bigger metros as well. 


Over 85% of our customers were men from the age group of 20 to 45. The average loan they tok out was around 15-16k INR and they primarily used the loans for medical fees, school fees, house appliances, home renovations and weddings. 


NIRA would get 100s of applications a day but only a tiny margin of those applications would be accepted for the loans. This meant that many people who didn't qualify or have supporting paperwork  would still try to apply.

Customer Issues


Given the diversity of our users and that they came from underserved classes, a big issue was making sure our app was understandable to them. We had 7 languages as options as well, but most still preferred to use the english version. 


Key Issues


  • Hard time uploading bank statements (because some banks were not digital yet or the customer was simply unfamiliar with digital banking/netbanking)

  • Updating customers on their loans with a very lean customer support team was a challenge

  • Operational care helped with tangibles like helping customers upload the correct document. 

  • Core customer complaints : not getting their money together  or asking why their specific loan was rejected



It is interesting to note that  98% of new users paid back their loan on time.
